About the Lilly Brand

Lilly Pulitzer's iconic brand began in the 1950s as a happy accident in Palm Beach, Florida. Lilly, a socialite who had married into the famous Pulitzer family, opened a juice stand using fruit from her husband's citrus groves. To hide the juice stains on her clothes, she asked her dressmaker to create colorful, patterned shift dresses. These vibrant dresses quickly became more popular than the juice itself, prompting Lilly to shift her focus to fashion. In 1959, Lilly Pulitzer officially launched her eponymous clothing line. The brand's signature look featured bright, bold prints in cheerful colors that embodied the Palm Beach lifestyle.Lilly's designs gained widespread popularity in the 1960s, especially after First Lady Jackie Kennedy, a former classmate of Lilly's, was photographed wearing one of her dresses. The brand's success continued through the early 1980s, with its clothing worn by affluent families and socialites. However, changing tastes led to financial difficulties, and Lilly closed the company in 1984.In 1993, the Lilly Pulitzer brand was revived when Sugartown Worldwide, Inc. purchased the rights. With Lilly's blessing, they brought back her iconic prints and styles, adapting them for a new generation while maintaining the brand's cheerful, colorful aesthetic.Today, Lilly Pulitzer continues to be a beloved fashion brand, offering clothing, accessories, and home goods that embody its founder's motto: "Everything is possible with sunshine and a little pink".The company now operates numerous retail stores and sells through major department stores, maintaining its status as a preppy fashion staple.
